Giftedness is
defined as children and youth, who are identified at the preschool, elementary,
or secondary level as possessing demonstrated or potential abilities that give
evidence of high performance capability in areas such as intellectual,
creative, specific academic or leadership ability or in the performing and
visual arts and who by reason thereof require services or activities not
ordinarily provided by a school. Giftedness is classified under learning
disabilities because of the testing procedures and the additional assistance
need in the learning process in order to ensure a successful education. Talented
and gifted students are usually identified by a high IQ score and a very high
strength in a particular area. Areas of strength can be anything from academics
to sporting activities to the arts to anything that one excels highly.
Giftedness is a condition that has to be observed, monitored and assessed
frequently throughout the student’s years in school to ensure that the student
is staying at or above course level without being held back or bored by
material in the classroom. It is a necessity of the teacher to make sure that
the student is not getting bored with material but on the same hand that the
teacher is not excluding the rest of the class by including the gifted child.
This is a very fine line that the teacher of a gifted student runs and has to
be highly monitored and well planned so that the student is the one who will
benefit and succeed.
